The School of Art and Communication offers seven undergraduate majors, and awards Master degrees in all the eight second-level disciplines of art theory and PhD degrees in three disciplines including art theory, film, and the radio and television art. As one of the first experimental institutions to develop Master degree of arts, Beijing Normal University has continuously recruited students for five years and become a professional training base for the high-level talents of art.

1.1 Talents Cultivation Concept

Relying on the advantages of a research-based comprehensive university, and based on the characteristics of the art disciplines as well as many years of teaching experience, the School of Art and Communication has developed a new undergraduate teaching concept to meet the current social demand for new art talent, namely, “Following Others to Swim Freely.”

The concept of undergraduate education combines the advantages of both the traditional art training model and the modern education system. As a traditional training model of art talent, the "mentoring system" helps teachers to instruct with their own experience and to train talents with specific skills, which is difficult to meet the contemporary social demand for inter-disciplinary art talent. The modern education system helps students to accept multi-disciplinary knowledge, but also shows certain defects in specific skills training.

The new cultivation concept is a way for students to follow the seniors, graduate candidates and teachers so as to gradually form research interests and an innovative spirit in a good academic environment. It is not only a highly condensed summary of the traditional art-teaching experience, but also a systemization and sublimation of past teaching methods, which can more effectively employ the research-based university’s strengths in graduate education, scientific research and academic construction. Accordingly, it is a beneficial and useful attempt to build an undergraduate teaching system with distinctive features and high quality in modern universities.

Through making full use of the excellent resources in the research-based university, like academic research and graduate education, it aims at helping undergraduate students follow the seniors, graduate students and teachers to gradually become people full of knowledge-inquiry spirit rather than passive recipients of knowledge. This concept inherits the Confucius teaching concepts “roaming in art,” “following” and “inspiration,” and fully absorbs the education experience of modern universities, and highlights the features of experience, practice, and creative work in undergraduate teaching of art. It is beneficial to explore and create a new undergraduate education model which not only follows the teaching law in art, but also meets the demands of modern innovative education and improves the quality of art talent cultivation.

Under the guidance of this undergraduate education concept, and conformed to the integration trend of art education professionalization and comprehensiveness in the 21st century, the School has made active exploration on the integrating mechanism of the specific education and teacher education system at Beijing Normal University, the art and science cross-disciplinary system, and has vigorously promoted the multiple and overall development of the higher education system of art and media, and has finally realized the combination of the university’s academic advantages and the School’s characteristics in art disciplines.
