Amid in the vibrant academic environment created by a comprehensive, distinctive and research-oriented normal university, the team of scholars and artists who form the faculty of the School of Arts and Communication (SAC) integrates academic research with artistic creation. SAC attaches great importance to the construction and training of its faculty and has formed an academic team of senior, middle-aged and young teachers who are full of initiative and potential for development. The teachers have obtained tremendous success in their individual fields of artistic creation and scientific research, which lays a solid foundation for teaching and research.
SAC has set up cultivation plans for the faculty which focuses on the improvement of teacher quality. According to the plan, the general improvement and special support should be combined, and on the other hand, the improvements in academic degree and academic quality should be integrated, and teachers’ academic degrees can be enhanced by continuous education in hope of optimizing the faculty. SAC has established several teaching groups mainly with young teachers, and the cultivation and training plans have been made to encourage them to improve their academic degrees. Meanwhile, the teachers are required to enhance their teaching skills through mutual learning and teaching practices. SAC carries out training activities regularly with an activity of “sharing experience, helping and guiding others” at the beginning of the semester. The leaders of SAC have put forward clear requirements for the faculty and encouraged them to actively explore the new methods to further enhance undergraduate teaching. SAC also held an “Experience Exchange Meeting for Teachers Studying Abroad” which invited those teachers who studied abroad and returned to introduce advanced teaching experience for young teachers. With the support of departments concerned of BNU, SAC will create conditions to encourage teachers with masters’ degrees to obtain in-service PhD degrees by striving to gain policy support and create favorable conditions for them.

At present, SAC has a total number of 66 full-time teachers. Indexes, such as age, academic degree, professional title, subject distribution and structure, etc., are comparatively reasonable and have a good trend of development. The faculty consists of one specially employed professor of Changjiang Scholars, one of New Century Excellent Talents and one specially employed professor of “Jing Shi Scholars” of Beijing Normal University. Some of these scholars take on the key academic positions, including the Standing Committee of Art Education Commission of the Ministry of Education, member of the State Council’s Academic Degree Appraisal Committee, vice director of College Art Teaching Steering Committee of the Ministry of Education, chairperson of Visual Art Education Discipline of China Higher Education Society, vice chairperson of Chinese Collegial Association for Visual Art, vice chairperson of Chinese Study Association of Stage Play History and Theory, vice chairperson of Chinese Tianhan Study Association, member of China Film Association, and the honorary vice chairman of Beijing Visual Artist Association. There are also many experts serving as the judges of many national awards including the Best Film Works Award and TV Series Award organized by Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee, Huabiao Award, Golden Rooster Award and Flying Goddess Award- awards for excellent Chinese films and TV programs. Since 2001, SAC has released more than 1060 academic papers, published 98 textbooks and monographs and 2 translated works. It now shoulders one National Key Social Science Foundation project, one National Key Project for Art Discipline and two Key Projects initiated by the Ministry of Education.

With excellent occupational integrity and high teaching standards, many faculty members have won teaching awards at university level and above.

SAC spares no effort in introducing high-level talent from other universities, and 40 faculty members have obtained degrees from other universities or had diplomas of other universities, which accounts for 68.2 percent of all faculty members.
