General Introduction
The calligraphic education in Beijing Normal University has an old tradition and long history. Back in the time of Fu Jen University (which then combined into Beijing Normal University), Qi Gong gave speeches and advice in the study of calligraphy; Shen Yinmo opened calligraphic classes on campus, and edited related books. In the 1960s, Qi Gong held calligraphic classes and related conferences for international students at BNU. Since the resumption of college entrance examinations in 1977, the calligraphic class has become one of the public compulsory courses of BNU and the compulsory course for undergraduate students with a Chinese major. Qi Gong and Qin Yonglong both gave lectures for this calligraphic class. Published in 1985, the calligraphic textbooks, “General Calligraphy” and “Reference Materials for Calligraphic Teaching,” exerted a widespread impact throughout the country. In 1987, entrusted by the Ministry of Education, BNU held the first workshop of national calligraphic education and cultivated a large group of calligraphic teachers and creative talent for universities in China.
In 1991, with the full support of Qi Gong, the calligraphic direction under the major of fine arts was opened. In 2007, the Department of Calligraphy was founded in the School of Arts and Communication at BNU. Professor Qin Yonglong was the first director of the Department.
