Introduction
The College has seven departments: Department of Movie and Television Media, Department of Music, Department of Art and Design, Department of Dance, Department of Calligraphy, Department of Art Theory, and Department of Digital Media. It consists of seven undergraduate majors: film & TV studies, digital media, musicology, fine arts, calligraphy, art and design, and dance. The Department of Art Theory mainly cultivates graduate students. The College includes such research institutions as Institute of Digital Media, Institute of Science and the Arts, Institute of Art Education, Research Center for Television Drama, Research Center for Chinese Calligraphy, Public Art Education Center, Movie and TV Creation and Production Center, and Research Center for Qi Gong Calligraphy, among others.
The College actively promotes a reform philosophy for undergraduate teaching, namely, “Allowing Others to Swim Freely.” The college strives to cultivate high-level art talent who produce fine-quality art and research, who have a rich cultural and artistic accomplishment, and who have deep national consciousness and international perspectives. There are currently 581 full-time undergraduate students, 275 graduate students, and 65 Ph. D. candidates studying at the College.
The College carries out rich artistic practices, creating conditions for this model of learning. It has successfully held sixteen sessions of the Beijing University Students' Film Festival, which is the only college student festival currently approved by the State Administration of Radio Film and Television, is one of the most influential film festivals in the Chinese-language arena, and has strong appeal among university students on the Chinese Mainland and in Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan.
The Beijing University Students' Music Festival also has broad impact. Based on a comprehensive and research-based discipline platform, the School of Arts and Communication of Beijing Normal University has developed a multi-disciplinary system for arts and communication education and is among the first group of schools of higher education in China authorized to present Art as a first-level subject with Doctoral degree. It is among the first group of pilot units enrolling and training students for the Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree, and it also covers all eight art categories and has the most extensive Ph.D. program (Filmology, Radio and Television Arts, Art Theory) and Master’s degree program (Art Theory, Filmology, Radio and Television Arts, Musicology, Fine Arts, Design Arts, Drama and Theater Study, Danceology). The College ranked fourth in 2004 in the only national evaluation program for first-level subjects of Art conducted by the Ministry of Education. Filmology was named a Beijing key discipline and national key cultivation discipline. The College offers the one of the first national "Circulating Post-doctoral Posts for Art Research." The College is also an experimental program for model reform of creative personnel training, recently approved so by the Ministry of Education. Over the years, the College has created a personalized, experienced, and practical teaching environment with its unique educational characteristic.
