BNU has a history of more than ninety years in the field of arts education, the oldest such discipline in China. Its predecessor was a hand-drawing division and senior music workshop established at National Beijing Higher Normal School in 1915, and then it was upgraded to the Department of Practical Art at Peking Normal University in 1933. In 1952, it became the art discipline of BNU. In 1987 the Department of Art Education was restored, which was integrated into Art Department in 1992 and then became the School of Arts and Communication in 2002. The incumbent Dean is Dr. Wang Yichuan, a Changjiang Scholar and the specially appointed Professor from the Ministry of Education.

Over more than ninety years of development, the School of Arts and Communication of BNU has witnessed a great number of renowned teachers and elite students. A group of artists enjoying a high reputation have taught or studied here, such as Xiao Youmei, Li Baochen, He Lüting, Hong Shen, Lao Zhicheng, Jiao Juyin, Wei Tianlin, Wu Guanzhong, Zhang Xiaohu, Jiang Fengzhi, and Qi Gong among others.
